The Pixel unit is offered with the option of 32GB or 128GB of UFS2.0 internal storage.
Sadly the handset lacks the water resistance of some other phones on the market, but in a phone so packed full of other features it seems like a reasonably small loss.
This phone unit runs Android 7.1 “Nougat” software as standard, and will also receive Android updates directly from Google. It should be noted that currently this version of Android is exclusive to Google phones – Nougat drops on other devices will not roll out until December.
Integration with Google Assistant allows live technical support from the OS, and integration with Google Daydream allows use of virtual reality programs. Unfortunately Assistant is very much a work in progress at the moment, but its goals are pretty high – much is expected of this program and hopefully Google will deliver. Pixel will also back images up to Google Photos – this service is unlimited and will continue for the life of the unit.
The handy little “Moves” options menu present on the Pixel gives several fast-track ways of using the phone, including the ability to swipe the fingerprint sensor for notifications, double-tapping the power key for camera access, and double-twisting the phone to switch between cameras. It's worth a mention for the simple fact that other handsets have had a few of these features, but the Pixel brings them all together.
So why should I buy one?
The Google Pixel and its companion handset the Pixel XL are, quite simply, at the cutting edge of developing software technology on mobile devices. Google Assistant promises to be excellent, the responsiveness and speed of the handset itself are excellent, and the physical attributes are very good indeed.
Regarding the user interface of the phone, it's uniform and well-polished with good ease of navigation and a sensible layout. The camera is super-fast and has various functions like panoramic and lens-blur shots as standard, with a very responsive video mode too.
Simply put, the Pixel is an up-and-coming Android powerhouse that's definitely going to be “one to watch”!
