In recent times, the battle for the mid-range smartphone market has been exacerbated by both Chinese manufacturers and leading brands that have revamped product catalogues, in an effort to offer more feature-filled affordable alternatives, for less. That said, the latest Galaxy J5 version comes with numerous cosmetic and performance upgrades.
It may not be an absolute star in terms of performance or camera features, but a true beast at the sales level, becoming a best seller in numerous countries, including India, following its 2016 launch. The ‘J' range from Samsung is placed one step below the ‘A' series, which boasts among other improvements – total water resistance with IP68 certification.
Design and display
The new Samsung Galaxy J5 boasts a metallic body. The South Korean firm apparently decided to banish plastic from one of its most economical lines to bet on a metallic finish, which is much more appealing both in terms of durability and aesthetics. It is also a unibody smartphone, so users cannot remove the back cover – meaning there is no option to change the battery as was possible with previous models.
The new Galaxy J5 has a significantly sharper camera. Not only does the rear camera have 13 megapixel specs, but the front camera as well. By contrast, the 2016 J5 version only had 5 megapixels. The cameras also boast an f/1.9 aperture, a selfie light, and an LED flash for both lenses. The main camera can shoot videos at a resolution of 1,920 x 1,080 pixels.
Under the Hood
The latest Samsung Galaxy J5 comes jam-packed with cool features for its price. The new version, like the first, features 2GB of RAM and 16GB of internal memory. This can be expanded with a MicroSD card by up to 256 GB.
The first significant change can be found in its processor, and Samsung has switched from the Snapdragon 410 to its own Octa-Core processor, Exynos 7870. When it comes to battery performance, there is a small downgrade with the power taken down from 3,100 mAh to 3,000 mAh. The phone also has Android 7, Bluetooth 4.2, WLAN, and an LTE module that provides data transfer rates of up to 300 Mbit/s.
