The Galaxy S7 Edge design remains virtually unchanged from the S6 Edge, but the latest iteration is almost 9mm taller at 150.9mm and weighs 157g. The dual-sided display (curved edges) makes a welcome return, offering comfort and better grip as well as sleek design.
The S7 Edge offers the same colour range as the standard Galaxy S7 model: white, black and gold platinum. The S7 Edge will also be available in a silver so bright it could almost double as a mirror.
Besides the added height allowing for a taller screen of 5.5 inches, there is little difference between the S7 Edge AMOLED display and other Galaxy models. Samsung has opted to keep the Quad HD resolution (2,560 x 1,440 pixels) over upgrading the 4K.
The S7 Edge will come outfitted with an Exynos 8890 or Snapdragon 820 processor. Samsung claim either will offer a 30 percent increase in CPU and GPU performance over the S6 model. Whichever processor is included, the S7 Edge boasts 4GB RAM and 32GB storage as standard. The S7 Edge also comes equipped with a new MicroSD slot on the topside of the device.
The battery has increased by 1,000mAh over the S6 Edge (and 600mAh over the larger and heavier S6 Edge+), which already had a decent battery life when compared to similar models on the market. The S7 Edge will have a total of 3,600mAh, which can be stretched even further by working with the OS battery management application.
Speaking of the OS, the Galaxy S7 Edge comes preinstalled with Android’s latest 6.0 OS version, Marshmallow. Whilst some of the lesser used S6 Edge applications have been dropped, the API has been tweaked to better accommodate the larger display, allowing the use of two columns rather than one, so more applications and functions are on-hand to the use at any one time.
TouchWiz remains unchanged from the previous iteration, but the S7 Edge model will come pre-installed with WhatsApp, Facebook and additional applications from Microsoft, as well as the usual suspects by Samsung and Google.
Whilst the S7 Edge camera bears the same 12-megapixels as the S6 counterpart, Samsung have invested in the S7 Edge’s low-light capabilities. The new camera combines an F1.7 aperture lens with dual-pixel technology to allow for a whopping 95% more light. This tactic for balance and contrast over high resolution combines for impressive photographs, especially in low-light where quality and speed show noticeable improvement.
Physically, the camera itself protrudes far less than previous versions of the Galaxy Edge, presenting a smaller and more aesthetic camera bump. The front camera also maintains the same specs as previous models, remaining at 5-megapixels.
Galaxy S7 Edge Special Features
Samsung has announced that the S7 Edge has a waterproof rating of IP68. This means it can be submerged in water as far as 1.5m deep for up to 30mins.
The fingerprint scanner on the home button will make a return to this model for those that prefer biometric access, including the heart rate monitor as well. However, the infrared port for controlling other devices, like the TV, has been removed.
Samsung has opted to stick with the Micro-USB v2 connector for their latest Galaxy model, as well as boasting 100 percent charge in 100 minutes. Wireless charging will reach 100 percent in 150 minutes.
The S7 Edge comes with an ‘Always On’ option which allows the user to always be able to view time, date and notifications, even when the mobile phone is turned off. Unused pixels will remain off whilst in this mode, so the impact on battery life is unlikely to be noticeable.
